Ithaca, New York
Ithaca is a leafy town in the upstate region of New York state. When I first visited, I took a less busy highway through the town of Owego. The road is narrow, lined with mostly farms, forests and some abandoned houses too. Quite a lot of them actually. I if you intend to drive to Ithaca, I suggest you do that in the summer or early autumn time because the trees are look spectacular. This is a great destination for tourists that love to do a lot in a single town. Because it is a small town, you can get to walk it in just a day.
hThis is an eccentric artsy town that also has a myriad of outdoor activities. You can go on hiking trails along the many waterfalls that are in the vicinity. One of my favourite places to go is the buttermilk falls. There are hiking trails along a huge gorge into which the buttermilk falls pour. These are great in the springtime when the ice melts and water begins to flow.
The Ithaca Commons is the main pedestrian street that is lined with shops and restaurants on either side. This is a place that looks like a good old American town from a Quentin Tarantino western film, only without horses. You know what I mean.
One that has not yet received a good doze of massive chain stores in large square box buildings with vast parking lots. At any time of the year, there will be either a magician performing tricks, a group of dreadlocked guitar players or just a lone guitarist in one corner of the square. During the summer time they have some big stage performances that are fun to see.
If you love cinema and theatre, right next to the commons is the beautifully lit, vintage looking state theatre. On the same street, you can see most of the art galleries and tattoo shops in town. In the evening when the sun sets and the neon lights from the theatre and tattoo shops come on, it is quite a beautiful sight.
There is a couple of great restaurants and coffee shops in Ithaca. For the food lovers, I apologize for not posting any pictures of food because I didn't intend to make a commercial for these great restaurants. I will just say however that I loved the ones I went to. Ithaca bakery is the first place I got to know about. Not because of their food but because I was looking for free parking when I took a walk around town. Please don’t tell them.
Well I decided to go in and was pretty impressed by the wide variety of their food. They have great organic food ranging from sandwiches, salads, soups, sauces, coffee and a lot of baked goods. If you have a sweet tooth, check it out. Ithaca College Town Bagel is a good one to try out too if you love Bagels. Lots of bagels.
